Who Are These People

Contrary to popular belief, Leaping Horse is not the name of the horse that went wild at the Kentucky Derby. It’s the name of a wine that comes from California.

You see, in 2002, the Kautz Family, makers of Ironstone Vineyards, got the idea to create a new wine brand. Their sales and marketing guy went to one of the family members and said they should use, of all things, grapes from Lodi and put Lodi on the label. Well, one family member talked to another and then another and before you knew it, Lodi made its national debut! And in case you didn’t know it, many larger wineries use a lot of grapes from Lodi in their wines – have for years, but were reluctant to put “Lodi” on the label.
Go figure…

Guess they thought folks like you wouldn’t consider a wine that wasn’t from one of the more well known wine regions in California, say one that starts with an “N” and another that maybe starts with an “S”. Anyway, their VP of Sales told them he thought they could sell 100,000 cases in the first 12 months. Needless to say, they all wondered what he was smoking.

The first year Leaping Horse was released, it found its way into 50 states and 4 countries selling over 300,000 cases. Why you may ask — it’s in the juice!

What’s up with the Label
We knew we wanted something fun and whimsical that would just “leap” off the shelf and we also wanted something different.  So instead of using an American design firm, we went across the pond to the UK.  By the way, they really like wines from California. Anyway, as soon as the graphic designer heard the name Leaping Horse, he immediately recommended an artist he had known for many years. He had been an admirer of Haydn Cornner’s work for quite sometime and knew this was going to be the perfect opportunity to use his style of work. Instead of commissioning a new piece of art, he simply asked him if he had anything which featured horses in his portfolio. As luck would have it, he had several and the one that we eventually used (with some digital modifications) just galloped towards us!

Haydn Cornner was born on the April 27th, 1961. This makes him a Taurus and along with other Taureans, he has good table manners and a penchant for custard creams – which go quite well with the Leaping Horse Chardonnay.

Haydn attended 12 educational establishments but only really learned about life when he was run over by a red Ford Escort. Prior to this his future career was to be in the military; afterwards he decided to become a surrealist. Haydn now lives and works by the sea in Hastings and has been a full-time painter and illustrator for nearly 20 years. His paintings are sold by the Portal Gallery in London's Piccadilly and he has had 6 one man shows. His illustration work, well known throughout the United Kingdom, has been used by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), British Airways, the New Yorker magazine and the Girl Guide Association.

In the Family

John Kautz, the son of German immigrants, was born in the Lodi, California area and founded his farming operations in 1952 with a few acres, his parents acquired in 1941, along with some milk cows. For over a decade, the farming operation consisted of very labor intensive crops of such as tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers and the like. It wasn’t until the late 1960’s that Kautz Farms began growing winegrapes

John saw the future of wine in this now well-known award-winning region and throughout the next three decades, they planted extensive acreages of winegrapes. In fact, they were the first growers to plant Chardonnay in the Lodi area against all the experts’ recommendations.

In 1989, John and Gail Kautz, now joined by their four children, began building Ironstone Vineyards Winery and Caverns in the historic gold rush community of Murphys, California. In 2003, they released Leaping Horse Vineyards and added Sonoma Creek to the family’s holdings.

Today, the Kautz family has over 7,500 acres of winegrapes and other properties and is the 8th largest family owned and operated wineries in California.
